Part of our complete Zanzibar travel guideThe best time to visit Zanzibar is during the two dry seasons: from June to October and from December to February. It's sunny, the sea is clear, and conditions for boat tours are ideal. However, since the island is warm year-round, there are good reasons for almost every month – here's the honest overview, month by month.
Climate in Zanzibar: Why There's No Bad Season
Zanzibar is located just south of the equator, it's tropical warm all year round (usually 26–32 °C), and the sea is always warm (26–29 °C). The big difference between the months is not the temperature, but the rain. There is a long rainy season in spring and a short one in November – in between are two wonderful dry seasons.
The Long Dry Season: June to October
This is the most popular and for many the best time to visit Zanzibar: little rain, pleasant humidity, perfect water for Blue Safari and Snorkeling with Dolphins. July and August are peak season – book early then. If you prefer less hustle and bustle, choose June or October.
The Second Dry Season: December to February
Hot, sunny, and ideal for beach and water sports. Over Christmas and New Year, it's busier and more expensive. January and February are a hidden gem: warm, clear, and still relaxed. If you want to experience Zanzibar romantically for a honeymoon, this is the perfect time.
Rainy Season: March to May (and briefly in November)
The long rainy season from March to May brings heavy, mostly short showers, often in the afternoon; some boat tours may be canceled. In return, the island is lush green, the beaches are empty, and prices are significantly lower. The short rains in November are usually harmless and rarely disruptive.

Tides and Festivals: Two Things Many Overlook
On the east coast (Paje, Jambiani), the tides dictate the day: At low tide, the sea retreats far – ideal for kitesurfing, but less for swimming. In the north (Nungwi, Kendwa), you can swim all day. Culturally, the Sauti za Busara music festival (usually February) and the ZIFF film festival (usually July) in Stone Town are worth it. Also note Ramadan: During this time, many local eateries are closed during the day.
