Part of our complete Zanzibar travel guide

Matemwe on the northeast coast is one of Zanzibar's quietest places: long beaches, sunrises over the sea and, offshore, Mnemba Atoll, one of the island's best snorkelling spots. As everywhere on the east coast, the tides shape the day, and swimming is mainly at high tide.

What defines Matemwe

Matemwe is a fishing village with a few quiet guesthouses and resorts, not a party place. In the morning the sun rises over the sea, the fishermen head out in their boats, and the reef shimmers off the coast. At low tide the shallow reef flat is exposed, at high tide the water turns turquoise.

Mnemba Atoll: snorkelling on your doorstep

Mnemba Atoll lies off the coast and is known for clear water, colourful fish and, with luck, turtles and dolphins. The small island itself is private; you reach the reef around it by boat. Just ask us how a snorkelling trip fits into your journey.

Who is Matemwe ideal for?

  • For those seeking peace and couples.
  • For snorkellers and divers.
  • For early risers who love sunrises.
  • Less for anyone who wants to reach restaurants on foot in the evening.

Getting to Matemwe

From the airport it is about one hour by car. You book the transfer to the east coast separately: Zanzibar airport transfer. Which other region suits you is compared in Where to Stay in Zanzibar.
