Zanzibar Tides: How to Plan Around Low and High Tide

Part of our complete Zanzibar travel guideIn Zanzibar, the tides shape your beach day more than the weather. On the east and southeast coast the sea retreats far at low tide and reveals a shallow lagoon, while in the north at Nungwi and Kendwa the difference is much smaller. Low and high tide change twice a day, each day about three quarters of an hour later. If you know this, you plan swimming, sandbanks and boat trips for the perfect time.
How do the tides work in Zanzibar?
As everywhere on the Indian Ocean, there are two high tides and two low tides a day, with a change roughly every six hours. The times shift by around 45 to 50 minutes each day. Around full moon and new moon (spring tide) the difference between low and high tide is greatest, and smallest in between (neap tide).
Where is the tidal range big, where small?
| Region | At low tide | Swimming | Tip |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nungwi & Kendwa (north) | Water usually stays close | almost all day | Ideal if you want to swim without a tide plan |
| Paje & Jambiani (southeast) | Sea retreats far, lagoon with seagrass | mainly at high tide | Walk out to the seaweed farms at low tide |
| Matemwe & east coast | Shallow reef flat is exposed | at high tide | Snorkelling at Mnemba Atoll by boat |
| Stone Town (west) | Sandbanks appear | hardly a swimming spot | Nakupenda sandbank at low tide |
| Michamvi & The Rock | Restaurant reachable on foot | at high tide | Take a boat to The Rock at high tide |
Which region suits you as a base is explained in detail in Where to Stay in Zanzibar and in the Beach Comparison.
Which tours depend on the tides
- Prison Island & Nakupenda: The sandbank looks its most beautiful at low tide.
- Blue Safari: The sandbank stop and snorkelling spots are planned by the tide.
- The Rock & Kuza Cave: At high tide the restaurant stands in the water, at low tide you walk out to it.
- Mtende Beach & Salam Cave: The natural pool is filled at high tide.
A good guide adapts the time of the tour to the tides – not the other way round. That is exactly what makes the difference between “nice” and “unforgettable”.
How to read a tide table
Look for a tide table for Zanzibar or Stone Town. It lists two high tides and two low tides for each day, with the time and water level. For the east coast, roughly speaking, swimming time is about two hours before to two hours after high tide. The greater the difference between the water levels, the further the sea retreats at low tide.
Low tide is no reason for disappointment
The lagoon at low tide is one of Zanzibar's most beautiful sights: women harvest seaweed, children look for starfish, fishermen walk out with their nets. Pack water shoes, because sea urchins and sharp corals like to lie in the shallow water. And if you want more honest insights: Expectation vs. Reality.
I plan your tours so that sandbank, cave and sunset fall at the best tide – free of charge and without obligation.
