Beach and sea
Both have that postcard turquoise. In the Maldives the reef is often right in front of your beach, and you snorkel straight off the jetty. In Zanzibar you take a boat to the best snorkelling spots, for example to Mnemba Atoll or to the sandbank on the Blue Safari. Culture and experience
This is where the biggest difference lies. The Maldives are a place of retreat: island, villa, sea. Zanzibar is a place to discover: the alleys and carved doors of Stone Town, spice plantations, red colobus monkeys in Jozani Forest, fishing villages and a night market full of aromas. The Maldives are almost always more expensive: resort islands charge full-board or all-inclusive prices, and transfers by seaplane or speedboat come on top.
