Part of our complete Zanzibar travel guide

Zanzibar or Mauritius? Mauritius scores with mountains, well-developed infrastructure and a lagoon protected by a reef all around the island. Zanzibar is more authentic, more African and usually cheaper, with Swahili culture, spices and the option of a safari. The deciding factors are often the time of year and your travel style – here is the comparison.

Beaches and sea

Mauritius is almost completely surrounded by a reef, which makes its lagoons calm and even. Zanzibar has longer, whiter sandy beaches and more variety: in the north you can swim all day, while on the east coast the sea retreats far at low tide. That sounds like a drawback, but it is an experience in itself: Tides in Zanzibar.

Culture and atmosphere

Mauritius is a blend of cultures, very well kept and strongly geared towards resort holidays. Zanzibar feels more authentic: the call to prayer over Stone Town, women in colourful kangas harvesting seaweed, fishermen mending their nets in the morning. What everyday life looks like there is shown in Local Life in Zanzibar.

Time of year: this is often where the choice is made

In the European summer both islands are in their dry season, but in Mauritius it is winter then, with cooler nights and wind. From January to March it is cyclone season in Mauritius, while Zanzibar has one of its best phases in January and February. In April and May, on the other hand, Zanzibar sees the most rain. You will find the month-by-month comparison in Best Time to Visit Zanzibar.

A matter of taste. Zanzibar has longer, very white beaches with tides on the east coast, Mauritius calm, reef-protected lagoons against a backdrop of green mountains.

In April and May, when it is the rainy season in Zanzibar, or if hiking, mountains and perfect infrastructure are important to you.
