Zanzibar Tours Reviews: How to Spot a Good Guide
By Haji, your local · updated on 09.10.2026 · 8 min read
Part of our complete Zanzibar travel guideMost experiences with tours in Zanzibar are wonderful – if you book with the right provider. A good guide gives you a fixed price up front, tells you clearly what is included, only travels with your group and plans around the tides instead of sales pressure. Here you will learn how to recognise that, which warning signs to watch for and why a local who speaks German often makes the difference.
The honest starting point: tours are offered on every corner
You have barely stepped onto the beach when someone approaches you: “Blue Safari? Prison Island? Good price, my friend!” These beach sellers – often called “beach boys” in Zanzibar – are part of the island scene. Many are friendly, and some even arrange decent excursions. The problem is not the person but the lack of accountability: if you pay cash on the beach, you have very little to fall back on when the boat is overcrowded, the pickup doesn't show up or the seafood lunch suddenly costs extra.
The good news: with a few questions you can tell the good offers from the bad ones in five minutes. And you don't have to be suspicious or unfriendly to do it – pole pole, nice and relaxed.
Seven signs of a good tour provider
- Fixed price up front: per person, in writing, without any “we see later”.
- Clear scope of services: pickup, boat, entrance fees, food, drinks: what is included, what is not?
- Private group or clear group size: you know beforehand how many people will be on the boat with you.
- Planning around the tides: sandbank, snorkelling and caves are most beautiful at the right time of day. A good guide adjusts the time, not the other way round.
- Safety: life jackets on board, a seaworthy boat, no overloading.
- Respect for animals: no chasing dolphins, no feeding, no touching turtles.
- Reachable before and after booking: via WhatsApp or email, with a name and a face.
Warning signs: when you should rather walk away
| Warning sign | Why it is a problem |
|---|---|
| Full price in cash up front, without a receipt | No proof, no recourse if the tour is cancelled |
| Price “depends” or suddenly in dollars instead of as agreed | Typical spot for surcharges on the day of the tour |
| Huge boats, “join group” with no upper limit | Convoy feeling, little time at the spots |
| Dolphin tours promising “100% swimming with dolphins” | Often leads to chasing the animals – stressful for them, disappointing for you |
| No life jackets, no shade on board | Safety risk on open water |
| Pressure: “this price today only” | Reputable providers don't need time pressure |
What do tours in Zanzibar realistically cost?
On the beach you sometimes hear prices that sound unbeatable. Behind them there is usually a large shared group or extras that only show up on the day. For private tours with just your group, our prices are, for example, from €79 p. p. for Stone Town & Spice Farm, from €129 p. p. for the Blue Safari and from €135 p. p. for Prison Island & Nakupenda. You can find all prices transparently at a glance on the price page.
The difference isn't just in the price, but in the day itself: no waiting for others, no convoy, time for photos and a guide who answers your questions instead of making loudspeaker announcements.
Why a German-speaking guide makes the difference
Many guides in Zanzibar speak good English. Still, it is something different when you can hear stories about the spice trade, safety instructions on the boat or ask the little questions in between in your own language. Especially for families, older travellers or anyone who wants to feel safe on their first trip to Africa, that is worth its weight in gold.
Our guide Haji is at home in Zanzibar and speaks German, English and Kiswahili. You can read who he is and how he works at Meet Haji.
How to book safely – step by step
- Choose a tour and check the price per person – for example in the tour overview.
- Give the date and your accommodation so the pickup can be planned.
- Receive the confirmation and secure your booking with the deposit online – you pay the rest relaxed on site.
- Briefly agree before the tour day: time according to the tides, meeting point, what to bring.
By the way, you book airport transfers separately if you need them – more on the page Zanzibar airport transfer.

Frequently asked questions
Is it safe to book tours in Zanzibar on the beach?+
It can go well, but it is a matter of luck: without a written price and scope of services you have little to fall back on. Safer is a provider with a fixed price, a clear description of services and a contact person who is also reachable after booking.
Are there German-speaking guides in Zanzibar?+
Yes, but only a few. Our guide Haji lives in Zanzibar and speaks German, English and Kiswahili. You can request and book tours with him directly through this website.
Should I book tours in advance or on site?+
In high season (July/August, Christmas to New Year) booking in advance is worth it, especially for private tours and safaris. In low season a few days ahead is often enough – what matters is that you have the price and services in writing.
How do I pay for tours in Zanzibar?+
With us you secure the tour with an online deposit and pay the rest in cash on site. That way your booking is confirmed and you don't have to arrive with the full amount in cash.
How do I recognise a respectful dolphin tour?+
By the fact that nobody promises you a guaranteed swim with dolphins. Respectful providers keep their distance, don't chase the animals and only let you into the water if the dolphins stay calm.
