Zanzibar Expectation vs Reality: What Really Awaits You
By Haji, your local · updated on 09.10.2026 · 7 min read
Part of our complete Zanzibar travel guideIn reality, Zanzibar often looks different from Instagram – but not worse, just different. The turquoise water is real, though not at every hour of the day, and you are rarely completely alone on the beach. If you know the tides, the beach sellers and the seasons, you will experience an island more beautiful than any photo. Here is the honest comparison from your local.
Expectation: turquoise water, all day long
Reality: on the east and southeast coast the sea sometimes retreats hundreds of metres at low tide. What is left is a shallow lagoon with seaweed and seaweed farms – wonderful for walking, but not for swimming. At high tide the famous turquoise returns. In the north (Nungwi, Kendwa) the difference is much smaller. Tip: check the tide table or stay in the north. Which region suits you is explained in Where to Stay in Zanzibar.
Expectation: secluded dream beaches
Reality: on popular beaches, beach sellers approach you – tours, jewellery, boat rides. It is usually friendly but can get annoying. A clear, smiling “Hapana, asante” (no, thank you) works wonders. Truly quiet places still exist: in the south and on parts of the east coast. Our favourites are in the Zanzibar secret spots.
Expectation: Stone Town like a picture book
Reality: Stone Town is a living old town, not a film set. Some houses are crumbling, it is loud, narrow and sometimes chaotic. That is exactly what makes up its charm. It is most beautiful early in the morning and at sunset – and with someone who tells you the stories behind the doors, for example on Stone Town & Spice Farm.
Expectation: always sunny
Reality: Zanzibar has two rainy seasons. The long rainy season (roughly April to May) brings heavy showers, the short one (roughly November) rather brief tropical downpours. In return it is greener, quieter and cheaper then. All months in detail: Best Time to Visit Zanzibar.
Expectation: excursions are the same everywhere
Reality: the same tour can be a dream or a mass excursion. The difference lies in group size, time of day and guide. On the Blue Safari, for example, the tide decides when the sandbank is most beautiful. What to look for when booking is explained in Zanzibar Tours: Reviews.
Expectation: Africa is cheap
Reality: Zanzibar is not a budget destination. Hotels, restaurants for tourists and excursions are often at European levels. Street food and local restaurants, on the other hand, are cheap. You will find honest budgets in What Does a Zanzibar Trip Cost?.
Expectation: a beach holiday like anywhere else
Reality: Zanzibar is predominantly Muslim. On the hotel beach swimwear is normal; in villages and in Stone Town you cover shoulders and knees. Those who respect this are welcomed with incredible warmth. More in the article about local life.

Is Zanzibar still worth it?
Yes – and precisely because of the reality. The island is not a smoothed-out resort destination but a place with history, the scent of spices, warm-hearted people and a sea that at high tide really does glow like in the photos. If you travel pole pole, with open eyes and a local at your side, you usually come back with the feeling of having experienced something real. Karibu Zanzibar.

Frequently asked questions
Is Zanzibar as beautiful as in the photos?+
Yes, but not at every time of day. You see the famous turquoise water mainly at high tide and in the north. With the right planning you will experience exactly the moments from the photos.
What is annoying in Zanzibar?+
Most often mentioned are beach sellers, low tide on the east coast and occasional power cuts. With a little prior knowledge all three are easy to handle.
Is Zanzibar worth it?+
For most travellers yes: beach, culture, nature and warm-hearted people on one island. If you are after pure luxury beach holiday without culture, you may be better off in the Maldives.
Is there seaweed on the beach in Zanzibar?+
Yes, especially on the east coast and depending on the season. It is natural and not a sign of pollution. In the north there is usually less.
