Booking Zanzibar Excursions: Tour Operator, Portal or Local?
By Haji, your local · updated on 09.10.2026 · 7 min read
Part of our complete Zanzibar travel guideYou can book excursions in Zanzibar in four ways: through your tour operator or hotel, through an international booking portal, spontaneously on the beach, or directly with a local guide. Operators and portals offer convenience but often large groups; on the beach it is cheap but non-binding. With a local you get private tours at a fixed price and flexibility around the tides. Here is the honest comparison.
The four options compared
| Option | Price | Group | Flexibility | Contact |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tour operator / hotel | rather high | often large, mixed | fixed departure times | tour rep at the hotel |
| Booking portal | medium | depends on provider | fixed slots | local provider, often unknown |
| On the beach | low, negotiable | unclear | spontaneous | hardly traceable |
| Local guide directly | fair, transparent | private, just your group | by tides and your wishes | a regular guide with a name |
Through a tour operator or hotel
Convenient, especially on package holidays: the tour rep at the hotel offers a fixed excursion programme. In return you usually pay more and are often out with many other guests, at fixed times that do not always fit the tides and the light.
Through a booking portal
Portals offer a wide choice and reviews. But whoever actually runs the tour is often a subcontractor you do not know beforehand. Pay attention to group size, pickup area and whether food and entrance fees are included.
Spontaneously on the beach
The cheapest, but also the least binding. If you pay cash in advance, you have little to fall back on if something goes wrong. What to look out for in that case is in Zanzibar Tours: Reviews & Experiences.
Directly with a local guide
With us you book private tours just for your group, with a fixed price per person, pickup at your accommodation and a guide who speaks German. You secure the tour with an online deposit and pay the rest on site. We plan the time around the tides, not the bus timetable. All prices transparent: price overview.
Book in advance or on site?
In high season (July/August, Christmas to New Year) booking in advance is worthwhile, especially for private tours and safaris. In low season you can also enquire a few days beforehand. A good middle way: secure the two or three most important excursions in advance and decide on the rest on site.
Excursions on your own?
You can explore Stone Town, the night market or a beach walk on your own without any problem. For boat trips, sandbanks, caves and safaris a guide is worthwhile: he knows the tides, the access points and safe boats. An overview of all excursions is given in The Most Beautiful Tours & Excursions.
