The best Zanzibar secret spots lie in the south and on the edges of the island: hidden natural pools in limestone caves, secluded bays like Mtende and quiet fishing villages where the day still runs by the tides. Here are ten secret spots your local loves – and the most important tip right up front: the right time of day turns a beautiful place into a magical one.

1. Mtende Beach – the bay at the end of the road

Right in the south, where the road ends, a small bay opens up between coral rocks. At high tide a turquoise natural pool lies before you, at low tide it turns into a rocky landscape. Hardly any beach sellers, hardly any sunbeds, just you and the sea. Best combined with the Salam Cave on the tour Mtende Beach & Salam Cave.

2. Kuza Cave – swimming in a limestone cave

Near Jambiani there is a natural pool deep inside a limestone cave, with crystal-clear water and roots hanging down from above. A place to fall silent. We combine it with a visit to the famous restaurant in the sea: The Rock & Kuza Cave.

3. Salam Cave – freshwater underground

Another cave in the south, less well known and wonderfully quiet. The water is so clear that you can see the bottom. Perfect after a hot morning in Jozani Forest.

4. Michamvi – sunset on the east coast

On the east coast the sun actually sets behind your back. The exception: the Michamvi peninsula. Its west side faces Chwaka Bay – and therefore looks straight into the sunset. A secret tip for everyone staying in the east who still wants golden evenings.

5. Nakupenda – the sandbank that appears with the tides

Nakupenda means “I love you” in Kiswahili. The snow-white sandbank off Stone Town only truly appears at low tide. With a small group and at the right time it feels like an island of your own – on the tour Prison Island & Nakupenda with a seafood lunch in the sand.

6. Kizimkazi – fishing village with an ancient mosque

In the south lies Kizimkazi, known for the dolphins off the coast. Less well known: in the district of Dimbani stands one of the oldest mosques in East Africa, with an inscription from the early 12th century. Dolphins in the morning, then a walk through the village – that is Zanzibar without a filter.

7. Mnarani turtles in Nungwi

Right in the north, near Nungwi, lies a natural lagoon where injured and young sea turtles are cared for. A quiet place in the middle of the lively north. If you want to see turtles in the open sea, you are in the right place with Turtles & Sunset.

8. Pongwe – palms, rocks, calm

Between Kiwengwa and Uroa on the east coast lies Pongwe: small bays with rocks in the water, tall palms and hardly any bustle. Ideal for a day when you just want to read and swim – at high tide.

9. Mangapwani – history that moves you

North of Stone Town lie the caves and chambers of Mangapwani. Even after the official ban on the slave trade, people were hidden here. Not a photo spot, but a place to pause – and to understand how the island's history still echoes today. More in History & Culture.

10. Stone Town at dawn

The most underrated secret tip is probably not a place but a time. At seven in the morning, the alleys of Stone Town belong to the bakers, schoolchildren and cats. The carved doors lie in soft light, and you have the old town almost to yourself. Afterwards, continue to the spice farm: Stone Town & Spice Farm.

Experiencing secret spots respectfully

  • Cover shoulders and knees in villages – more in the article about local life.
  • Only photograph people with their permission.
  • Check the tides: many bays and sandbanks are only beautiful at the right tide.
  • Don't take shells, corals or starfish with you.
