Part of our complete Zanzibar travel guideZanzibar or Thailand? Thailand offers a huge choice, legendary street food and very low prices on the ground, but is very touristy in the well-known places. Zanzibar is smaller, quieter and closer to Germany, with Swahili culture, hardly any time difference and the chance to combine beach and safari. The time of year often helps decide.

Getting there and time difference
An underrated point: the time difference to Zanzibar is only one to two hours (compared with Germany), so jet lag plays practically no role. In Thailand it is five to six hours, and getting to the islands usually means an extra domestic flight or ferry. Especially for short trips of a week or for families with children, that makes a real difference.
Beaches and island feeling
Thailand has spectacular limestone cliffs and bays, but also a lot of bustle on the well-known beaches. Zanzibar has long, white beaches where in the morning you often meet only fishermen and cows, and sandbanks in the middle of the sea. Which beach suits you is shown in Zanzibar beaches guide.
Costs
On the ground Thailand is usually cheaper, especially for food. In Zanzibar you pay a little more for accommodation and excursions, but often save on the flight and travel time. What a trip realistically costs is worked out in How Much Does a Zanzibar Trip Cost?. Our tour prices are listed transparently in the price overview.
