Jambiani, Zanzibar: Quiet Fishing Village on the Lagoon

Part of our complete Zanzibar travel guide

Jambiani is the quiet counterpart to Paje: a long fishing and seaweed-farming village on the southeast coast, with a turquoise lagoon, small guesthouses and plenty of real island life. If you are looking for peace and want to experience Zanzibar from its original side, you are in the right place. As in Paje, swimming is mainly at high tide.

What defines Jambiani

In the morning fishermen walk out with their nets, at low tide women harvest seaweed in the lagoon, children play on the beach. Jambiani is not a holiday resort but a village where guests happen to live too. With a bit of respect for the people – shoulders and knees covered in the village, photos only with permission – you will be welcomed very warmly here. More on this in local life in Zanzibar.

Who is Jambiani ideal for?

  • For those seeking peace and late sleepers without party noise.
  • For travellers who want to experience real village life.
  • For explorers: Kuza Cave is very close by.
  • Less for anyone who wants a wide choice of restaurants in the evening.

Excursions from Jambiani

Very close lies the limestone cave Kuza Cave, ideally combined with the famous restaurant in the sea: The Rock & Kuza Cave. Further south await Mtende Beach & Salam Cave and the dolphins off Kizimkazi.

Getting to Jambiani

From the airport it is about one hour by car. Most relaxed with a private transfer: Zanzibar airport transfer.
