Part of our complete Zanzibar travel guide

Paje on the southeast coast is Zanzibar's kitesurfing hub: a wide, turquoise lagoon, reliable wind and a young, relaxed atmosphere with beach bars and small guesthouses. Important to know: at low tide the sea retreats far here, so swimming is mainly at high tide. From Paje you reach the caves, bays and The Rock restaurant in the south particularly quickly.

The lagoon and the tides

Paje lives with the tides. At high tide, turquoise, shallow water lies in front of the beach, perfect for swimming and kiting. At low tide the lagoon becomes a wide landscape of sand, seagrass and seaweed farms where the women of the village work. How to plan around it is explained in Tides in Zanzibar.

Who is Paje ideal for?

  • For kitesurfers and anyone who wants to learn.
  • For young travellers, backpackers and couples who like it laid-back.
  • For explorers who want to discover the south with its caves and bays.
  • Less for anyone who wants to swim at any time of day – then rather head north.
