Is Zanzibar Safe? Honest Answers from Your Local

Part of our complete Zanzibar travel guide

Zanzibar is basically a safe and very hospitable destination for holidaymakers. The most common problems are pickpocketing, pushy beach sellers and overpriced offers – not violence against tourists. If you avoid lonely beaches at night, secure your valuables and know the current advice of the German Federal Foreign Office, you travel relaxed. Here is the honest assessment (as of 9 October 2026).

The short answer

Yes, Zanzibar is safe for the vast majority of travellers. Millions of guests from Europe spend relaxed holidays here every year. As in any travel destination, though, there are a few rules that make the difference – and situations you should know about before you fly.

What the Foreign Office currently says

The German Federal Foreign Office advises particular caution in Stone Town, on unguarded beaches and in remote areas, and recommends no beach walks after dark and, if possible, no overland journeys. Around 29 October 2026, the anniversary of the 2025 elections, anti-government protests are expected; more checks and restrictions are then possible too. Always check the current travel and safety advice for Tanzania before your trip.

Crime: what to watch out for

  • Leave valuables in the hotel safe and take only the essentials to the beach.
  • Do not walk on lonely stretches of beach after dark.
  • In Stone Town in the evening, stick to busy alleys or go out with company.
  • Do not hold your phone out in the open by the roadside, and carry bags closed.
  • In the evening, order a taxi through your accommodation rather than taking a random driver.

Beach sellers and rip-offs

Most unpleasant experiences in Zanzibar are not a danger but sales pressure: tours, boat trips, souvenirs. A friendly “Hapana, asante” (no, thank you) is usually enough. Book excursions only with a fixed price and a clear scope of services – how to spot reputable providers is explained in Zanzibar Tours: Reviews & Experiences.

Is Stone Town dangerous?

During the day Stone Town is lively and easy for visitors to explore, ideally with a guide who knows the alleys. In the evening the night market in the Forodhani Gardens and the main routes are busy. You are better off avoiding winding, empty alleys at night. Our tip: get to know the old town on a guided tour like Stone Town & Spice Farm.

Sea creatures: sharks, jellyfish, sea urchins

Shark incidents are practically irrelevant on Zanzibar's swimming beaches. More common are sea urchins on reefs and rocks, and seasonally jellyfish. Water shoes protect your feet when wading through the lagoon at low tide. When the water is shallow where is explained in the article Tides in Zanzibar.

Health as a safety factor

The biggest health issue is malaria – the Foreign Office cites a high year-round risk across the whole country. Mosquito protection and medical advice before the trip are therefore a must. Everything important in Malaria in Zanzibar.

Women travelling alone and LGBTQ+ travellers

Many women travel alone to Zanzibar and feel comfortable. Modest clothing away from the hotel beach and a clear no when someone is pushy help. Important to know: in Tanzania, homosexual acts are punishable; all couples are better off keeping public affection discreet. More on the culture in the article about local life.

More rules you should know

  • Drug possession and use are severely punished.
  • Do not photograph military facilities, police or government buildings.
  • Plastic bags are banned – including in your luggage.
  • Since 2024 (Zanzibar) and October 2026 (mainland), state travel insurance is compulsory: Entry & Visa.
